The Cognitive Shuffle: The Sleep Trick That Actually Has Science Behind It

The cognitive shuffle is a sleep onset technique developed by cognitive scientist Luc Beaudoin at Simon Fraser University and popularised through his app and subsequent media coverage. Unlike many viral sleep tips, it has a specific theoretical grounding in sleep science and addresses one of the most common and resistant causes of delayed sleep onset: uncontrolled cognitive processing.

What the Technique Involves

The cognitive shuffle is simple. Pick a random word, preferably a concrete noun with no emotional significance. For each letter of the word, visualise as many random, unrelated images as possible until the letter is exhausted, then move to the next letter.

For example, if the word is "table": T might produce images of a taxi, a turtle, a teapot, and a tree. A might produce an anchor, an apple, an astronaut, an ant. The images should be unrelated to each other and specifically unrelated to your actual concerns, plans, worries, or memories from the day.

The goal is deliberate randomness and visual richness without narrative structure.

Why It Works: The Science

Beaudoin's theoretical explanation draws on sleep research about what distinguishes the pre-sleep mental state from waking cognition.

Research on hypnagogia, the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep, shows that it is characterised by fragmented, associative, non-linear imagery. Dream-like fragments, disconnected images, and loosely associated sensory experiences are the cognitive signature of the pre-sleep state. The cognitive content shifts from the organised, goal-directed, narrative processing of wakefulness to something more random and disconnected as sleep approaches.

Beaudoin's insight is that insomnia often involves maintaining waking-mode cognition (organised, evaluative, narrative, goal-directed) at a time when the brain is trying to shift into hypnagogic mode. The cognitive shuffle mimics the random, disconnected imagery of the hypnagogic state voluntarily, effectively simulating the pre-sleep cognitive signature to nudge the brain in the right direction.

This is distinct from other cognitive approaches to sleep, such as suppression (trying not to think about something, which is ineffective and tends to produce rebound thinking) or distraction with a specific narrative (which can maintain the organised narrative processing of wakefulness). The deliberate randomness is the key feature.

How It Differs from Standard Imagery Distraction

Standard imagery distraction for sleep, researched by Allison Harvey and others, involves visualising a specific pleasant scene (a beach, a forest, a favourite place) in as much detail as possible. This is effective for reducing cognitive arousal, but it uses an organised, coherent scene, which maintains some narrative structure.

The cognitive shuffle takes a different approach by explicitly breaking coherence and organisation. The resulting mental content more closely resembles the hypnagogic state. Some preliminary research by Beaudoin and colleagues suggests the cognitive shuffle reduces time to sleep onset compared to standard distraction, though larger trials are needed to confirm this.

Who Benefits Most

The technique is most useful for people who lie down and immediately find their mind engaging in organised cognitive processing: planning, reviewing, problem-solving, or ruminating. This is extremely common and is described in more detail in our article on racing thoughts at night.

It is less useful for people whose primary sleep problem is waking in the night (where it can be applied but may be harder to execute when groggy) and less useful for people whose sleep onset difficulty is primarily physiological rather than cognitive (where thermoregulation and cortisol are the main targets).

For the anxiety-driven version of this problem, where the organised cognition is specifically anxious or ruminative, the technique works by occupying the cognitive resources that rumination uses. Comparison with the Military Sleep Method

Both the cognitive shuffle and the military sleep method address pre-sleep cognitive arousal, but through different mechanisms. The military method uses visualisation of a specific peaceful scene (like the canoe on a lake), which is closer to standard imagery distraction. The cognitive shuffle uses random, disconnected imagery specifically to mimic hypnagogic content. They are not mutually exclusive, and some people combine the somatic relaxation elements of the military method with the cognitive shuffle's imagery approach.

How to Practice It

The technique requires no preparation and no equipment. Begin it the moment you want to start transitioning to sleep:

  1. Close your eyes.
  2. Think of a random word. Concrete nouns work best. Avoid words with emotional charge or that connect to your current concerns.
  3. For the first letter, generate a stream of random visual images, each appearing briefly before being replaced. Keep them unrelated to each other.
  4. Move to the second letter and repeat.
  5. Continue until you fall asleep.

Most people report that they do not complete the word before sleep arrives, which is the intended outcome.

What This Means for Your Sleep

The cognitive shuffle is a technique with genuine theoretical grounding in sleep science. It works by mimicking the disconnected, random imagery of the hypnagogic state, helping the brain shift from organised waking-mode cognition to the pre-sleep cognitive mode. It is a practical, free, zero-risk technique for sleep onset difficulty driven by racing or organising thoughts.
